All global warming arguments and apocalyptic theories aside, you can't deny the crazy weather patterns we've been experiencing this year. While New England is definitely used to this kind of thing, we never get tired of talking about it or finding new ways to keep our life moving even when the weather refuses to cooperate.
Staying active and having fun is much easier said than done... especially when you're on vacation, but before you hide away in your room to watch endless hours of television, check out some of these weather-proof activities in the Sandwich area.
1. Learn How to Blow Glass
Ever notice how glass is one of those things that we all know and love, but we don't really have any idea where it comes from? The Sandwich Glass Museum is the perfect place to view tons of unique glass pieces, learn how glass is made, and maybe even blow some glass for yourself!
Live glassblowing exhibitions happen every hour on the hour, and the glassblower will choose one lucky guest to press an actual piece of glass. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
2. Take a Walking Tour through Time
Before you ask, no- this tour does not involve Deloreans or Hoverboards. Instead, it involves the historic Wing Fort House which is believed to be oldest known homestead in the US continuously owned by the same family.
I know it sounds boring, but hear me out! Each room is set up with furniture, decor, and rare artifacts that represent a specific time period. One second, you're in a colonial kitchen, but a few steps later, you may find yourself in a beautiful Victorian-inspired parlor. And remember: there HAS to be a reason why they never wanted to sell the place...
3. Do Some "Magical Shopping"
Shopping never gets old and it's definitely weather-proof, but your average souveneir shops can get boring. I mean, once you've seen one, you've seen 'em all. Instead of spending all your money on shot glasses and t-shirts, why not take a trip to Sandwich's own Lavender Moon?: your #1 source for all things "magical!"
Not only is this place fully stocked with tarot cards, herbs, and smudge sticks, there are always physhics on duty ready to tell you about your future. Whether you believe in the paranormal world or not, this is an unexpectedly fun way to have a few laughs, check out some really creepy merchandise (this just in: "Witch Balls" are back in stock), and maybe even learn something new.
While your beautiful room at the Belfry and our delicious food might be enough to keep you dry and entertained during even the rainiest days, you should definitely take some time to brave the storm to explore some of these indoor Sandwich treasures.
While we may like to remind tourists that Sandwich, MA is a history and quaint Cape Cod town and NOT something that can be ordered on rye, there is one time every year we embrace the synonymous term: Sandwich Fest!
Once a year, people from all over (including the locals) travel far and wide to find the answer to the age-old question: Who has the best sandwich in Sandwich?
With some of the best restaurants on the Cape taking part, the competition is stiff. We're up against favorites like the British Beer Company, Cafe Chew, and Momo's, but here's to hoping we can bring the trophy back this year and win those bragging rights for the whole year.
Even if you're not a sandwich person, there's plenty of non-edible fun for the whole family to enjoy; children's activities, live musical performances, local artists and craftsmen, a family sing-along, and even a costume parade!
We'll be back to report on all the delicious festivities next week, but in the meantime, you can check out Sandwich Fest's official website or check out some of our menus here if you feel like getting a preview of the future Sandwich Fest champions.
And don't forget to stop by! The tasty celebration takes place on SATURDAY, JUNE 30 2012 from 10AM - 4PM in Sandwich Village (Jarves & Main Streets).
See you there!

When planning your Cape Cod style vacation, you can rest assured knowing that there will be no shortage of activities that you can schedule during your trip. Whether you are looking for old fashioned beach getaways, hiking, cycling, restaurants, or museums, there is sure to be something that you will enjoy. Cape Cod National Seashore offers over 40,000 acres of wildlife preserves that stretch out over 40 miles with spectacular and breathtaking views of salt marshes, dunes, and rippling beach grass. While you should limit your swimming to the calmer bay side waters of the Cape, more skilled and adventurous swimmers can tackle the strong currents and rip tides that the Atlantic Ocean throws at them. Along the seashore there are also many hiking trails that will challenge any hiker, and there is even a visually impaired hiking trail equipped with guide ropes and Braille markings to let people know what is surrounding them. The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is an 1,100 acre paradise for those who love bird watching, staring out at the bay, canoe and kayak trips, and lavish walking trails. And for peddlers that can't stand to go anywhere without their bikes, there is the 25 mile trail that runs from Dennis to South Wellfleet and is sure to be one of the most memorable bike rides you've ever had. After your long bike ride, you can head over to the Sandwich Board Walk for even more bike trails, wonderful swimming pools, and fantastic Sandwich Cape Cod Beaches.
Another must do activity to schedule while planning your Cape Cod style vacation is whale watching. From May through October, you can hop on a guided tour boat and witness some of the most beautiful humpbacks, minkes, right whales, and finbacks as they search for plankton in Stellwagen Bank. Or if you bring the whole family, you can take the Oceanquest cruise, a 90 minute guided tour that caters to children and teaches them about oceanography, lets them pull up a lobster trap, and even drag a plankton net. They can learn about the chemistry of seawater and many more great ocean dwelling facts that they are sure to remember for the rest of their lives. Regardless of what you are planning for your Cape Cod style vacation, you are sure to enjoy the many sights and sounds the Cape has to offer.
