The Abbey: The Perfect Romantic Getaway

Screen Shot 2012 07 05 at 11.50.04 PM resized 600

As we've mentioned before, the Belfry is not your typical inn. We don't really believe in beige walls, standard showers, or seemingly cloned guest rooms; oh no. We understand that you want accomodations that suit your style and personal needs. Seriously, we've got something for everyone in every possible occasion.

Whether it's your wedding night, some long-overdue alone time, or maybe you just wanted a weekend away from the kids, The Abbey is where you'll want to be. I know the whole "church" feel might make you a bit uncomfortable at first, but once you pass through the doors, you'll forget you're in a once-sacred building and be immediately blown away by the unique, fairytale-worthy decor.

PERSONAL SPA

No more low-pressure showerheads or tiny tubs! Each room in The Abbey is complete with only the best private bathroom facilities. Enjoy the Tuesday Room's whirlpool tub which can comfortably hold two people, relax and rejuvenate all your senses with the Wednesday Room's Vedana Spa Unit, or let all your stress melt away with the John Drew Room's (The Painted Lady) jacuzzi tub. With ammenities like these, you'll never want to leave your room!

RUSTIC FIREPLACES

While it might be too hot to even consider lighting a fire in this weather, you have to admit that there's nothing more romantic than cuddling up next to the fire with someone you love. If you find yourself at The Belfry during one of the colder seasons, take advantage of the beautiful gas fireplaces that can be found in the Sara Drew Room (The Painted Lady), the Thursday Room, or the Friday Room.

EUPHORIC DELICACIES

Some chefs claim there are certain foods that help "set the mood," but let's be honest: ALL of our mouth-watering dishes will make anyone happy. So either make a reservation for a dinner date at The Belfry Bistro, or call the front desk to have something yummy brought up to your room to enjoy in a more intimate setting. Not to mention, we have quite the wine selection if you find yourself feeling a bit thirsty.

So skip the cheap motel or the local Budget Inn and book your next romantic retreat at The Belfry. We're committed to making your stay perfect, stress-free, and something you'll never forget.

Let's do Lunch.. at the Belfry!

Lunch. We ALL look forward to it during a long workday, and while we all would love to take an hour and enjoy a gourmet, sit-down meal, sometimes there's just not enough time in the day (or money in our wallets). We tend to find ourselves at the nearest fast-food drive-thru or ordering a greasy slice of pizza from the place down the street, but come on: isn't it time you broke tradition and treated yourself to a quality lunch?

The Belfry Bistro makes it easy to enjoy a nutritious, gourmet lunch with co-workers, friends, family, business partners... anyone you want! Aside from our delicious menu options, we also offer reasonable prices so that you can experience the Belfry's prize-winning food without the fancy dinnertime price.

So instead of chowing down on your usual Ham & Cheese on Wonderbread, why not try one of our delightful lunch entrees? Here's a few of our favorites:

  • Flat Iron Steak Sandwich (made with Marinated Steak, Boursin Cheese, and Shaved Onions)
  • Grilled Free-Range Chicken Quesadilla (made with Cheddar Cheese, Oico de Gallo, Spinach Tortilla, and Chipolte)
  • Baked Mac'n'Cheese (made with Five Cheeses, Chorizo Sausage, and Buttery Crumbs)
...and that's only the beginning! We have a huge variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and drinks for you to try. So if the thoughts of juicy steaks and creamy mac'n'cheese are making your mouth water, stop by the Belfry Bistro anytime between 11:30AM and 3:00PM!

What Sets the Belfry Inne Apart?

When it comes to choosing a B&B or restaurant on Cape Cod, the choices really are endless. Each area of the Cape has so much to offer, and with so many different inns to choose from in Sandwich, MA alone, it's important to know what sets the Belfry apart from everyone else.

1. The Atmosphere

If you've checked out our Facebook page, attended one of our Wednesday night wine tastings, spent a night in one of our THREE buildings, or even stopped by for lunch one afternoon, you've probably noticed how community-oriented we are. Here at the Belfry, we don't just book rooms, serve meals, and cash out; we establish lasting, personal relationships with our guests. We don't want to be "just another place to spend a night on the Cape," we want to be a home you can always come back to (and that you hopefully want to come back to, eventually).

2. The Decor

While most hotels and B&Bs pride themselves on having basic, clean-cut linens and furniture, we like to stand out. So whether you find yourself waking up to a giant stained glass window in The Abbey's Tuesday Room, catching some rays on the private porch of The Village House's Burgess Room, or relaxing in the whirpool massage tub of The Painted Lady's Martha Room, you will be surrounded by unique, memorable furnishings you'll want to tell your friends about.

3. The Cuisine

When you think "Cape Cod dining," what comes to mind? A paper bucket filled with fried clams? Maybe a basket of fish'n'chips? Well, we don't like to stick to the usual Cape tradition. Sure, we love us some fried seafood, but when you're dining at the Belfry, we go above and beyond to create an exquisite, NEW menu experience that will make you forget how much you love the "Clam Shack" basics. Order something classic like our Dayboat Chatam Codfish, or try something new and different like our Five Spiced Long Island Duck Breast. And don't forget to finish things off with a mouth-watering Caramel Chocolate Tart.

We know you have a lot of places to choose from when planning your Cape Cod vacation, but if you give us a chance, we promise you'll be coming back for more in no time.

Top 5 4th of July Fireworks Shows on Cape Cod!

ar126215539676345 resized 600

There's just something about mini explosives lighting up the sky that we all just can't get enough of during the summer. Thanks to all the salty beaches and quiet ponds, Cape Cod is filled with some of the best fireworks-viewing locations in New England.

1. Falmouth - 7/4 at 8:45PM (only 30 minutes from Sandwich!)

Find a spot near the gorgeous Falmouth Heights beach and tune your car radio (or iPod) to 92.7FM to hear the music that accompanies the show!

2. Hyannis - 7/4 at 8:45PM (only 20 minutes from Sandwich!)

Head down to one of the many beaches around Hyannis Harbor, grab a bite to eat at one of the area's many shops and restaurants, or bring a late dessert to enjoy while watching the sky light up.

3. Martha's Vineyard - 7/4 at 9:00PM

If you find yourself on the Vineyard for the 4th, head to Edgartown to check out their amazingly patriotic fireworks display. It might seem like a stretch, but remember, it's only a short ferry ride away!

4. Plymouth - 7/4 at 9:00PM (only 25 minutes from Sandwich!)

Even though Plymouth isn't technically "down the Cape," it's pretty close and hosts some of the best fireworks in the area. I mean, it doesn't get more patriotic than Plymouth: one of the first colonies in America, right? So head on up there and find a spot anywhere near the Plymouth Waterfront.

5. Onset-Wareham - 7/4 at 8:45PM (only 20 minutes from Sandwich!)

Onset has always had that old-fasioned feel to its beaches and atmosphere, so it's a pretty sure bet that the fireworks display will be just as timeless and classic. Head out to the Onset Beach/Bay area to check it out.

You know what's even better than the fireworks themselves? Heading back to a clean, cozy room after a long day at the beach, cooking out with friends, or whatever you find yourself doing this Independence Day. Let the Belfry Inne and Bistro be your go-to, post-fireworks hangout spot. (And while you're here, let us buy you a drink!)

3 Easy Steps to Planning a Wedding at the Belfry

outside and lots of street

When it comes to planning your wedding, things can definitely get a bit stressful. Whether you're planning every little detail down to the tablecloth cover or taking a laissez-faire attitude and leaving everything to the last minute, it can be a hectic time. Here at the Belfry Inne and Bistro, we want to make your wedding as stress-free as possible, so we've broken down the event planning process into three easy steps:

1. Picking a Ceremony Venue

One of the best parts of planning your Cape Cod wedding is just that: the location. The Cape is filled with a variety of possible event venues. From beaches to parks to hotels, the possibilities are really endless. When choosing a ceremony venue, it's important to consider these factors:

  • Size: Is the venue big enough to hold all your guests? Or, if you're planning a small, intimate ceremony, is it too big? Be sure to consider guest seating, bridal party positions, and aisle length.
  • Weather: Does the venue require a sunny, rain-free day to work properly? If so, do you have an alternate rain location picked out?
  • Driving distance: Is the venue within reasonable driving distance for your guests and bridal party? Is their adequate parking on-site, and if not, will there be reliable group transportation?
The Belfry is only a short driving distance from a variety of beaches, churches, hotels, and event halls. So whatever you choose, the Belfry is always a convenient reception option.
2. Picking a Reception Venue
While we obviously HIGHLY recommend booking your wedding or event in the beautiful Belfry Inne and Bistro, we ultimately leave the decision up to you. Be sure to consider the following when choosing a reception location:
  • Menu options: Does the venue offer the food you want at a price that works for you? If not, do you have a catering company picked out instead? In terms of beverages, do you want an open or cash bar?
  • Size: Are there enough tables for all your guests? Is there room to dance? Is there adequate parking?
  • Does the venue have a romantic feel- or at least the "feel" you're going for? How do you feel about the decor?
I've already written about the deliciously unique menu options the Belfry Bistro has to offer, but just to remind you, we offer a variety of classic dishes with delectable twists for less than $100 per head! Customize your personal menu and take advantage of our medium-sized space for all the lounging and dancing your guests will need. Not to mention, the decor is something you will never forget!
3. Figuring Out Guest Accomodations
The last thing you want is to throw your close family into some half-price motel to cut costs. There's plenty to consider when choosing accomodations for your guests, but all that really matters is: Will my family be comfortable here?
If you don't know the answer to that question, chances are they're not. If you book your event at the Belfry, we will reserve up to five beautiful, comfortable rooms for you and your guests complete with a complimentary breakfast, free wi-fi, and no creepy budget motel rooms. Your guests will thank you later, I promise!
There's a LOT that goes into planning a wedding or event, but the Belfry WANTS to help you every step of the way. Check out our "Events" page to learn more and take the first step to booking with us.

Spend your 4th of July in Sandwich, MA!

shawme4th resized 600

Before you spend another Independence Day at a cookout your way-too-nosy in-laws, why not break tradition and try something new this year? Let's face it: The 4th is one of those holidays everyone tends to do the same thing ever year for, but since it lies right in the middle of the week this year and some of us are lucky enough to have the rest of the weekend off, why not make a mini vacation or at LEAST a day trip down to Sandwich, MA to take part in our festivities?!

The 3-Mile Fun Run (8:30 AM - registration at 7:15)

While you may be used to packing on a few pounds of hotdogs and hamburgers during the 4th, maybe you could spend the morning getting a little extra exercise to save room for the feast later on. The Sandwich Recreation Department is hosting a 3-mile "fun run" for anyone aged 13 or older. A $5 donation will get you a number and a $15 donation will get you a t-shirt to make you remember your valiant efforts.

The "Spirit of Sandwich" 4th of July Parade (10 AM)

Unlike most parades, this is one that EVERYONE can participate in! Feel free to decorate your bike, wagon, or maybe even your dog to walk down the parade route waving to your adoring fans. If marching's not for you, every parade needs bystanders! Pick a comfortable spot, set up a few camping chairs, and enjoy the flots, antique cars, music, and (most importantly) the free candy that is sure to be thrown. The parade is true family fun for everyone!

The Lions Club Egg Toss and Picnic (11:30 AM)

If you're looking for some old-fashioned fun and a chance to meet some new people, stop by the park, pack a lunch, and play some Egg Toss! It sounds lame at first, but I promise- it's addicting. Not to mention, the kids will love it.

The Muster Events (1 PM)

If you've had enough of the July heat, check out the Henry T. Wing School Grounds for a bunch of water games to help cool down you and your family! I'm not sure what they're offering, but I assume there will be plenty of water balloons, ice buckets, and slip'n'slides for everyone.

The Boat Parade (9 PM)

For almost 200 years, the town of Sandwich has hosted a 4th of July Boat Parade at Shawme Pond. Stop by the bandstand area around 9PM to see boats decorated the the occasion and illuminated with lanterns. This could be the perfect way to end your fun-filled day.

So switch up your normal routine this year and give Sandwich a chance! I can't promise you'll stay dry or hungry, but I can definitely promise you'll have a good time.

The Belfry Bistro Rated #6 Best American Restaurant in New England!

Screen Shot 2012 07 02 at 12.35.54 AM resized 600

You know you love the food, drink, and amazing atmosphere the Belfry Inne and Bistro is so well known for, but did you ever think we'd be rated as one of the best in all of New England? Neither did we!

This past week, Open Table (one of the web's most trusted restaurant review sites) made their annual lists of the best American Restaurants in the country in honor of the July 4th holiday, and the Belfry Bistro came in a humble 6th place (out of ALL of New England)! While our menu is definitely not your basic, All-American faire, we are proud that our unique, delicious, and truly classic dishes have won over so many positive reviews.

Here are some of our favorites:

"We really enjoyed the Belfry Inn during our recent vacation on Cape Cod. The setting is unique and very warm in a converted Catholic church. We were promptly and warmly greeted and shown to our table right away. Our meals were absolutely top notch - something for every taste - and I had the best tuna dish I think I have ever had. The service was very good and not obtrusive. This place was a great "find" for us and we highly recommend it."

"We had brunch on a perfect sunny Sunday in the Belfry's outdoor patio. It was a beautiful oasis. There was an outstanding guitarist playing who perfected what was already a serene venue. The food was great; the service excellent. We've eaten indoors on several occasions and thoroughly enjoy its unique atmosphere."

"We were greeted at the door with a cheerful "Happy Anniversary!" and were given a wonderful table for two. Our waitress, Kerry, was attentive, patient and eager to answer the several questions we had regarding a particular wine and one of the entrees. She even took the time to ask the bartender to write down the ingredients for the great martini I had! The food....FABULOUS as always."

At the Belfry, we welcome and appreciate ALL feedback, so feel free to tell us about your experience on our Open Table page, Yelp, or by giving us a call.

At the Belfry, we understand that no getaway is complete without some type of spa treatment, which is why we have installed a new Vendana Care Unit in our Wednesday Room (of the Abbey). This innovative Bain Ultra unit will take you far away from Sandwich and into a relaxing, harmonious dreamworld whenever you want to... if only for a few minutes.

The Vendana features five core therapies that will work through all your stress using mediums best suited for your personal experience.

And be sure to let us know if you enjoyed it, as we look forward to installing the system in some of our other rooms.

3 Reasons to have your DREAM Wedding at The Belfry

I wanted to start this post with something like "wedding season is in full swing," but let's face it: modern-day weddings have no season. Whether you're dreaming of blue skies and lots of sun, a snow-frosted winter wonderland, or a cool, crisp autumn feel, the Belfry Inne & Bistro is the perfect venue for any wedding.

Instead of dealing with overpriced, below-par catering or hotels that try to trick you into having a "magical" reception in a conference room, check out how the Belfry goes above and beyond to make your wedding memorable, classic, and fun for everyone.

1. Delectable Dining

873696cc 40e3 4620 94e3 8c581ff55b46 resized 600

At the Belfry Bistro, you will never be asked "chicken or fish?" Instead, we offer unique, delicious dishes that your guests will absolutely love. Some of our favorites include:

Butler-Passed Hors d'oeuvres:

  • Crispy Mango Jalapeno Chicken Skewers - served with an exotic Mango Chipolte Salsa
  • Lamp Chop "Lollipops" - in a mouth-watering Rosemary and Mint marinade
Appetizer, Soup, or Salad Course:
  • Seared Yellow Fin Tuna - served with Cucumber Avacado Salad in a Citrus Soy Vinaigrette
  • Salad of Baby Iceberg Lettuce, Cumbled Blue Cheese, Marinated Hot House Tomatoes, Apple Smoked Bacon, and Buttermilk Herb Dressing
  • Cape Lobster Chowder - with Celery Root and Local Sandwich Lobster
Entrees:
  • Pepper Crusted Loin of Berkshire Pork - served with Pancetta Mashed Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables, and Lemon Herb Jus
  • Line Caught Atlantic Swordfish - served with Herb Risotto, Grilled Asparagus, and Roasted Tomato Buerre Blanc
  • Pan Seared All Natural Filet Mignon - served with Fingerling Potatoes, Asaparagus, and Baby Carrots in a Cabernet Reduction
Not to mention, our extensive drink menu will be fully available to you in the form of either an Open or Cash Bar, depending on your preferences.
For this caliber of food, you'd expect to pay at least $200 per head, right?
Wrong! The Belfry Bistro offers these gourmet options at an average of about $90 per head.*
2. Comfortable Accomodations
Screen Shot 2012 06 30 at 4.21.24 PM resized 600
At the Belfry, we know how important the comfort of your loved ones is, and the last thing we want is for them to end up at some low-end motel or cooped up in their in-law's guest room. When you book your wedding or event with us, we will reserve up to 6 incredibly beautiful guest suites in The Abbey as long as you book for at least two nights.
Your friends and family will feel more at home than ever in our rooms and will probably never stop thanking you, and once they've fully digested their amazing meals from the night before, they can fill up on a complimentary breakfast or just lounge out in their air conditioned rooms while watching flat-screen cable TV or using our complimentary Wi-Fi internet.
3. Have you SEEN the place?
belfy inn resized 600
Who doesn't dream of getting married in a fairy-tale worthy church complete with stained glass, beauiful artwork, and fancy table settings? It's every girl's (and maybe even some guy's) dream. At the Belfry, we can make this dream a reality and give you that "royalty for a day" feeling.
I could talk about it for days, but words just don't do it justice. To see more of the Belfry, check out our room pages or come by and visit!

Make the MOST of a Rainy Day in Sandwich, MA

All global warming arguments and apocalyptic theories aside, you can't deny the crazy weather patterns we've been experiencing this year. While New England is definitely used to this kind of thing, we never get tired of talking about it or finding new ways to keep our life moving even when the weather refuses to cooperate.

Staying active and having fun is much easier said than done... especially when you're on vacation, but before you hide away in your room to watch endless hours of television, check out some of these weather-proof activities in the Sandwich area.

1. Learn How to Blow Glass

Screen Shot 2012 06 27 at 5.04.08 PM

Ever notice how glass is one of those things that we all know and love, but we don't really have any idea where it comes from? The Sandwich Glass Museum is the perfect place to view tons of unique glass pieces, learn how glass is made, and maybe even blow some glass for yourself!

Live glassblowing exhibitions happen every hour on the hour, and the glassblower will choose one lucky guest to press an actual piece of glass. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

2. Take a Walking Tour through Time

Screen Shot 2012 06 27 at 5.13.37 PM resized 600

Before you ask, no- this tour does not involve Deloreans or Hoverboards. Instead, it involves the historic Wing Fort House which is believed to be oldest known homestead in the US continuously owned by the same family.

I know it sounds boring, but hear me out! Each room is set up with furniture, decor, and rare artifacts that represent a specific time period. One second, you're in a colonial kitchen, but a few steps later, you may find yourself in a beautiful Victorian-inspired parlor. And remember: there HAS to be a reason why they never wanted to sell the place...

3. Do Some "Magical Shopping"

0 21 Psychic resized 600

Shopping never gets old and it's definitely weather-proof, but your average souveneir shops can get boring. I mean, once you've seen one, you've seen 'em all. Instead of spending all your money on shot glasses and t-shirts, why not take a trip to Sandwich's own Lavender Moon?: your #1 source for all things "magical!"

Not only is this place fully stocked with tarot cards, herbs, and smudge sticks, there are always physhics on duty ready to tell you about your future. Whether you believe in the paranormal world or not, this is an unexpectedly fun way to have a few laughs, check out some really creepy merchandise (this just in: "Witch Balls" are back in stock), and maybe even learn something new.

While your beautiful room at the Belfry and our delicious food might be enough to keep you dry and entertained during even the rainiest days, you should definitely take some time to  brave the storm to explore some of these indoor Sandwich treasures.
