In 1992, when Christopher Wilson, financial planner/trust banker and innkeeper wannabe, first spotted the ramshackle, tumbledown former 1872 rectory on Jarves Street in historic Sandwich village, the project was complete.

His vision for the building? A reincarnation as a grand Victorian painted lady turned Bed and Breakfast. Selling his vision to the bank and town building officials was quite another matter. Wilson persevered.  He fell in love with the soul of the lady. Knowing that beauty is only skin deep he performed a makeover…some say a miracle! In December 5, 1995, The Belfry Inne & Bistro opened for its first guests. The Bistro was located on the first floor, with its small fireplace bar and three intimate dining rooms and served a pre fixe dinner menu. Tented weddings were held in the rear garden area. Nine guest lodging suites were created upstairs, in addition to the owner’s quarters of three bedrooms for Wilson and his two sons, Christopher and Alexander.e in his mind before he signed a purchase and sales agreement. She was a faded beauty, and many said she was past her prime. “Sad when someone lets themselves go like that,” people whispered. She was forlorn a mere shadow of her former glory.

The former rectory was originally built for the George P. Drew family. Mr. Drew a merchant had a clothing and provision store on Cape. He was married to Martha Southworth and had two daughters Ida and Sara. In 1920 the building was sold to the Arch Diocese of Fall River for use as a Rectory.

Located in the most beautiful area of Cape Cod, comprising three glorious restored period buildings in historic tranquil Sandwich Village, the jewel is The Belfry Inne, a luxurious historic Cape Cod bed and breakfast inn that casts an enduring spell upon all who enter. Each edifice hails from a distinct architectural period and has been renovated and fitted with handsome furnishings and a host of outstanding amenities including our highly acclaimed gourmet restaurant the Belfry Bistro, the whimsical Painted Lady café and the now spa services.
